IMPROVE FOCUS
What I am talking about when referring to focus is your ability to direct your attention to something and remain focused on it. This means you’re able to complete a task without being distracted by; others, the media, funny cat videos, or anything else that takes you away from finishing what you started.
Modern media has trained us to have short attention spans. Advertisements are short and punchy, narratives have lots of highs and lows to maintain our interest, and very few pieces of popular music last more than three minutes if that.
If you Google ‘How to Improve Focus‘ these are some of the suggestions that come up –
- Concentrate on the moment
- Reduce distractions (turn off the radio, television, etc)
- Stop trying to multitask. It’s been proven it doesn’t work
- Have adequate sleep. Statistics show at least 33 – 45% of Australian adults are suffering from sleep deprivation. This is definitely going to affect your ability to focus.
- Practice mindfulness, yoga, meditation
- Improve brain function through brain training (neurofeedback is an easy way to do this)
- Take a break. This is basic good health maintenance. Don’t stay seated for too long and change your eye line focus.
- Eat a healthy diet of fish, fruit, and vegetables. These are great brain foods.
- Exercise regularly to improve blood and oxygen circulation to all parts of the body, including the brain.
Many of the above are simple, common sense. Some require a change of habit. One of the easiest ways to change a habit is to replace a bad habit with a good one. Substitute a fruit snack for those biscuits. Ensure your bedroom is conducive to sleep (no distractions) and apply good sleeping habits (going to bed and getting up at the same time each day.)
A simple way to help you change your mindset and your habits is through neurofeedback (brain training). It gives you very similar results to ten years of Zen Buddhist Meditation (as advised by a psychologist I know) without discipline or the same time commitment.
